HI.

I think I can share some advice with all the 21-year Humans out there.

Let me jump to the points.

First. let me introduce my self. I am Arunava, 21-year-old boy. I haven’t been to a college for formal education. I honestly tried, once.

I have been working as a freelance developer for some time and I had a very precise dream to LEARN JAVA AND MAKE A ANDROID APPLICATION. Yeah. this was my dream 3 years back and I failed at it very hard. Even I failed at many more things like I got kicked out of jobs for my behavior and my poor performance, lost the student internship at google for not being able to interact with others during an ongoing record project.

So after all this, I think I know some things that might help some of you.

When I got the internship at IBM R&D section for chipsets and chicklets

one of the HR told me two things:

  1. Never share how much experience you have with your client. Because as soon as you do that you are also sharing how much behind you might be according to there expectations.
  2. Don’t share your age with your client because not only your client but anyone loves to rule out opinions based on age and work ratio.

My words will be for all the 21-year-old out there because I can 100% relate to them. You are young at everything you do- from work to hobbies or daily tasks.

People will not trust you.

people will be eager to refuse you.

people will discount your opinion because of your age.

Think. Am I not right?

SO DON’T TELL THEM.

Another important thing. Do not masturbate the night before your exam or interview. You a boy or a girl doesn’t matter. just ignore it.

Travel

Your parents will say you have huge responsibilities ahead as you are for example 20 now. But trust me, there is enough time for you to take care of duties and responsibilities. At the age of 30 or so whatever plan you might have(most of you want to have kids and families and that’s not absurd at all) you will want to travel differently.

The Question you need to ask yourself is that

How do you know what you want to become if you don’t know what is out there for you to do?

Don’t travel for the sake of traveling.

Travel to beautiful places to enjoy, to tough places to learn the difference of different world types, discover things for your own knowledge book.

Build things

The only thing you should be really FOCUSED on at this age is building things for your self. Don’t spend too much time working for other people’s(parents for example) visions. You are a human with your own feelings with a very unique character. Think about the bigger goal and then break it down in pieces. We don’t succeed because we have small goals and we achieve them. But because we had bigger goals and we ran for that bigger picture. You are too young to waste time in anything other than self-improvement. Decide for yourself that 20 years from now when you look back, you can proudly say that yes, I took the right decision.

Read

Read things. Articles, books, stories. Yes, maybe you are scared of reading because WHY READ AGAIN? WE SPENT LAST FEW YEARS JUST READING AND READING AND WE ARE TIRED. Trust me, the fear that you have in your mind regarding reading is not your fault. I was a damn bad student in school. I hated studying. I failed in one class and got zero in math once. But now I love reading. I read one small book on Greek mythology every week. That much interesting I find reading in general because I don’t have to answer to anyone about what I read on paper. I don’t have that stress in my mind and instead, I start by faking the enjoyment in reading literally any book and eventually it all becomes clear and things are now much more interesting.

Read about people and know them to relate to certain points. This will help a lot.

Watching Television? STOP IT

Don’t do it. watching television isn’t helping you in any way and you will surely regret doing it in the long term. My small family has no TV. So did we ever miss it? yes. at first, we did. But then we accepted this as a fact and soon we started to come up with different things to do replacing our TV watching habits. The result has been great, for the last 6 years now. I am certainly proud of this.

Trust People

That’s all you got to do. Trust people till they brake your trust. Don’t fall for those cinematic dialogues where they say “Don’t trust people cause they will hurt you”. Anything in this world can potentially hurt you. So don’t blame people. But don’t be naïve. Some people are out there to Fuc* you.

Value Time

Do not waste your time. for context:

It’s told that

“If Bill gates had dropped a dollar on the floor, for anyone it would take 2 to three seconds on notice to pick it up but if he had to pick it up he will lose billions of dollars in that few seconds of his diverted focus.”

I am not saying that don’t pick the money you dropped. you ain’t that reach. But you can not afford to have that diversion in focus.

Count your time, not just for the sake of counting it. Value other people’s time, don’t waste your time for that one lover with whom you are in doubt to be in a relationship with. Find a reason to use that coming five minutes in your life.

Start a stopwatch(not a timer cause that gives you an unwanted rush to do something which is not always necessary) and just do your work. Now when you are done see for yourself how much time it took you to do that work. you will always find that not all the time was utilized. there were some distractions, ignorance. And think how much more you could do in that time frame if those distractions weren’t there. Time is that best currency for you.

Fail and Success

Fail a lot. I mean not intentionally and not every time but try to learn from why you failed. Failing can be the reason why you need to succeed, can be the reason why you need to improve, can be the reason to try again.

Learn every time you’ve failed or there is no meaning in failing and all you got is your failure.

Patience

Be patient. Nothing is worth doing without patience.

Finally, don’t look for motivation. There is nothing like motivation. I found it in the first few years of my career. If you are feeling the lack of motivation in doing something then it’s simple because you are not interested in doing that. Choose to do what you like. This is the golden age for you to choose.
